Interface resilience strategies

Since early 2008 our colocation options all included two gigabit uplink ports into redundant switches. Back then layer3 switches were rare and expensive, as was MC-LAG (Multichassis Link Aggregation), so we had layer2 VLANs for each customer spanning the whole network, with spanning tree to handle in the event of link failure.


These days all our edge switches are fully layer3 capable (Cisco 4948E-F-E).
